Asus ROG Ally Preorders Are Live Now

The new Windows-based handheld gaming device costs $700 and releases June 13.

Preorders for the Asus ROG Ally are live now, following the official announcement presentation on May 11. The brand-new PC gaming handheld launches on June 13 for $700, putting it squarely in competition with Steam Deck. A second, less powerful model will release later this year for $600, but this version isn't available to preorder yet. If you're interested in the ROG Ally, we'd recommend ordering as soon as possible, as preorders could sell out--especially since the device is exclusive to Best Buy at this time and it's not clear when more will be available. In addition to the handheld, there are several official accessories, including a pro controller, carrying case, and charger dock.

The Asus ROG Ally is the manufacturer's answer to the Steam Deck. Though the Windows handheld is slightly pricier than the most expensive Steam Deck ($649), its specifications, as you'll see below, are more impressive than Valve's handhelds. It remains to be seen how the two handhelds will compare from a direct performance perspective.

You can check out the full specifications for the $700 ROG Ally below. The $600 version that releases in Q3 2023 will come with the AMD Ryzen Z1 processor, rather than the Z1 Extreme outlined below.

Asus ROG Ally Specifications

Don’t want to wait for the ROG Ally? Then consider picking up a Steam Deck, which is readily available to purchase directly from Valve. On the Windows handheld front, the Ally is joining a constantly growing market, including the very impressive and high-performing Ayaneo series of portable gaming PCs.

Here is a review that compares the device to the Steam Deck. Seems like they weren't successful at a seamless console-like experience, technical knowledge is required, buttons feel cheap and stick, disc shaped d-pad, only 2 back buttons, sometimes the controller buttons stop responding and software needs to be reset, games aren't optimized for this like they are for the Steam Deck, convenient UI that controls advanced hardware features is missing, battery life is "horrible", add-on GPU is not recommended. Performance mode for ROG Ally only works when power adapter is plugged in, not available untethered. But out of all the Windows handhelds apparently this one is the best.

I think it's a good idea, but it will have major issues just like, or even more so than Gaming Laptops. Because of it's small size. No thanks, i'd take a steam deck, i mean 8.6 teraflops in something this size? Uhh NO. That's more than the card in my Desktop.

ROG ALLY supporting GamePass right out of the box it's a huge deal maker.

It's practically a superior Xbox handheld over the SteamDeck.

@johnny0779: Assuming Steam works just fine on this thing, you're probably right. Anybody who doesn't already have a big Steam library would be better off getting an Ally and Game Pass PC so they've got stuff to play.

@mogan: It would be a total waste of time and resources on Asus part if the ROG ALLY doesn't have 100% compatibility with Steam.

Seeing how much effort Asus is putting on flaunting the Windows 11 and GamePass compatibility as the SteamDeck's shortcomings it would be crazy for them not to support Steam libraries.

I am not going to trash this new device as I have yet seen what it can do and I do have the Steam Deck and can talk about that. Yes, the battery life is not the greatest, but it can play most games in my library and I did not expect it to play every game and achieve greatness that can be achieved by playing on a PC as it cannot have all the bells and whistles but at least it is close. I am interested in this as well but rather wait and see how well it can do Steam on it for if does not go well, I am not paying twice for the same programs as my Steam library is very large. However, if I was to buy this, I can use both.

@lonewolf1044: The UI is a little funky but performance wise it's significantly better than the deck except when running in low power mode.

@Barighm: But with all the power it has it will burn like a marshmallow over a fire I assure you. Asus are good, but these companies can't even keep gaming laptops cool. Let alone something this size.

If they can get this thing out at $499, I think it has real chance to grow the portable PC gaming market. But seriously doubt it'll come at that price. Probably more like $700 would be my guess. Even so, that would be a significant drop in price for a device that seems like it's trying to represent a more high end version of the portable PC gaming device vs something like the Aya Neo which came in a $1k plus. So depending on it's price, it'll reveal where the market is really at with devices like this.

Valve really got the price/performance right, plus the custom OS+interface, Deck Verified program, and developers actually targeting the device for performance and compatibility.

The competition just won't be able to measure up to that complete package.

LOL yeah... NO... there is no case...

- Price/Performance right? No... Asus brings a device MUCH more powerful on every level, for just $50 more...

- Custom OS+Interface? YOu mean the same one you can install on the Ally?

- Deck Verified program? You're joking, right? That BS is only needed in the first place due to the crappy Linux/Proton underneath... None of that is needed on the Ally, running Windows all games will just WORK, no need to "verify" anything...

The competition not only measured up to that package, but left it in the dust... Expect Steam Deck sales very soon...

@walterg74: We have no idea how well SteamOS runs on the Ally.

The Deck Verified program doesn't just verify compatibility, but performance and considerations for use on a smaller screen.

Knowing if a game will perform well and have a consistent experience is valuable.

Having this all ready out of the box is much easier and more convenient than the Ally which will force the end user to install this themselves and test the games themselves.

And the Ally is $200 more and was only available over a year later.

Actually, we do: it doesn't run the greatest, but the performance and improved resolution of the ROG more than makes up for it, and it runs Windows by default so you can use whatever launcher you like if it you don't like the ROG's launcher.

@Barighm:So do my gaming laptop and gaming PC, but I do not want another PC-like device. I prefer the console-ized Steam Deck or Switch or even a phone, because of the straightforward and convenient operation.

People keep calling these, 'competition for Steam Deck', but it's Nintendo's 3rd party software sales which are going to be the most affected now that these handheld PC's exist. Nintendo handhelds are basically going to be relegated to only being used for Nintendo exclusive IP's, and even then, you can emulate most of those on these devices as well.

We're going to get to a point where one day if you want a game like Animal Crossing, Metroid, Pokémon, Mario Kart, etc, you won't neccessarily even need to buy a Nintendo handheld, because there will be multiplatform alternatives, which you can play on devices like these. And when that happens, I honestly think it will be time for Nintendo to start thinking about going 3rd party.

@Mraou: Emulation/piracy is not something your everyday Switch owner knows about or cares about. Most people who care to emulate Switch games probably already forego purchasing the Switch, and I imagine this has been the case for many console generations at this point.

Nintendo’s doomsday forecast is not necessarily another competitor but rather botching the Switch’s successor like they botched the Wii’s successor. Unless that happens, Nintendo is not going third party coming off the success of the Switch, one of the best selling systems of all time only behind PS2 and Nintendo’s own DS.

@Mraou: you say that as if it's a bad thing. That's great. Nintendo needed to be knocked down with their cocky ways. Once the Nintendo switch becomes obsolete, they will come out with another system and then you'll be paying MORE money to have backwards compatibility for those same switch games on the newest system because they aren't gonna give them to you for free becauseyou paid for them already. unless you have a switch and keep it working. They'll just pimp you out again, leaving no choice but to emulate them. Just like they have with every other system. Nintendo is a sickness that most die hard fans don't even realize.

@primemooseart: many Nintendo systems have backwards compatibility...from the original ds, to the wii, to the wii u and 3ds.. the next switch will definitely be backwards compatible with the current one or else risk losing their 100 million plus customers who own switches now

LOL no they don't.. they're just using an emulator, and selectively choosing games, charging you a rip off to play them.

@walterg74: well if you want to be wrong then go ahead... Gba could play physical gameboy games the ds could play physical gba games, the 3ds can play physical ds games, the wii could play physical GameCube games and heck even let you use the controllers, the wiiu takes wii discs... The next system will definitely let you play switch games.. if you wanna be mad about nothing then power to you don't play if you don't wanna Nintendo won't miss your money

Sigh.... yes.. consoles from 20 years ago had backwards compatibility. The switch does not, it's an emulator. Even Wii was only backwards compatible on the first genereations, then they removed all that, including gamecube controller ports. Wii U was only compatible with Wii because it was a big F*ck up and failed miserably, pretty sure they didn't even know what they were doing. So NO, it is not a priority for Nintendo, and next switch will definitely not be backwards compatible...

@primemooseart: You always have a choice to respect the IP owner’s handling of its property. You don’t have to pirate or emulate. You can sign up for their subscription or just not play those games at all. Games are not a necessity like you make them out to be.

@The_Deepblue: you do realize you just posted this in a "video ame" article about "video games" right? Because im in my 40's and "video games " have always been a part of my life, as for majority (if not all) of the people in and on this "video game " website. So it's wierd for you to state ("games are not a necessity").

@primemooseart: You said that people have “no choice but to emulate them.” You’re saying that people just have to break the law because Nintendo is particular and protective over their Intellectual Properties.

You made it sound like it’s the equivalent to having to steal bread not to starve or something.
