PSVR 2 Is Now Available At Major Retailers

The popular headset is coming to third-party stores beyond PS Direct.

After spending a few months as a PlayStation Direct exclusive, the PSVR 2 headset is finally coming to major retailers. We've begun to see several retailers get the device in stock, including Amazon and Best Buy.

PSVR 2 was met with largely positive reviews when it launched in February. Our PSVR 2 review found it to be a solid device with loads of potential, along with premium build quality and surprisingly easy setup.

“The PSVR 2 is undoubtedly a major step forward for PlayStation's virtual reality ambitions and one of the best headsets on the market, but in the ever-shifting landscape of virtual reality, its price and current value proposition leave it in an awkward position once again,” wrote critic Tamoor Hussain. “I hope that Sony and its partners start thinking outside of the box a bit more when it comes to games, and commit to supporting the platform long-term in a meaningful way--the excellent hardware deserves as much.”

Expect to learn more about PSVR 2 availability in the coming weeks.

OK, I think this is really going to help Sony shift a lot more units now. Good move. And, hopefully this means I'll finally get to demo the damn thing. I want one myself, but I'm going to shell out until I can test it firsthand to see if the mura and small sweet small is something I can live with.

Never buy anything Playstation related other than the main console. Their handhelds fail, their PSVR failed, their motion controller thing failed. Sony for whatever reason just do not support them with their own games. They'll make a few and give up on it and then it dies slowly supported by third party while their entire first party focuses on the main unit.

I'll buy PSVR2 when it supports PC and costs £300, then it will replace my Oculus Quest 2.

@Slannmage: really there was a psvr1 game that came out this week.

fact is the psvr2 is a great tech and already has many great games.

psvr2 300 for that much tech behind it? good luck. the pc headset with the same features cost 1200 bucks that has eye tracking and 4k visuals.

yet 300 bucks man people expect way to much psvr1 is still 350.

It still needs more original games, particularly AAA. All peripherals are at some point in danger of becoming a Wii, an ornamental object that sits on a shelf, ignored, after a time. But I still think ultimately it will have been worth it for someone like me who hasn't previously owned another headset.

People rave about games like Pavlov and Runner looks like a potential Sleeper hit. An early price drop is a nice pipe dream but unnecessary if I can get my VR feet wet with lighter experiences (of which there are already plenty on PSVR2) before diving into Gran Torino and Resident Evil. And I will definitely hold out to experience the RE4 remake in VR.

God, I'd love to be a guy working for Sony's VR team right now. I'd be trying to get a license for a Rogue Squadron-type game and pitching a stealth action game and an espionage RPG.

Great, now maybe more games will come. Heck, I would even buy a lot of ports from the previous version.

The fact that it's not in stores in day 1 means they don't want it to succeed in a long term. This thing is a brick. Not enough games and you have to buy a ps5 us a deal breaker. You gave to spend over a grand. The games are expensive too. I worry about support.

@shamatuu257: yes, that was their business strategy. Sell their highest end gear at a loss after putting untold money into R and D. Makes perfect sense.

It already has more games than any base console at launch.

When they roll out the first flying car to the public, you'll say the same thing.

"Too expensive, not enough mileage, it costs more than five figures. This f*ng fling car is a brick. They never intended it to succeed."

over a grand? 99 percent that buy a psvr2 head set already has a ps5 or wants a ps5. you think some will say i want a psvr2 but not a ps5? 550 for the that tech is cheap as hell. if you look at a pc headset with eye tracking and 4k visuals it is 1200 that does not even have a 110 degree field of view. its meant to be sold for ps5 owners. games are expensive why? because they are vr games which should be free? gt7 is a full game yet its expensive. horizon call of the mountain is 8 hours long for 50 bucks. ps3 error the game was average 8 hours yet they were 60 bucks. people expect to much for pennies.

@shamatuu257: The PSVR 2 was a no buy for me as it is married to the PS 5 and you can"t go beyond their library like the Meta Quest 2 can and while it may be less powerful than the PSVR 2 it does allow me to use the VR games I have on Steam which expands my library. Now if I can get the PSVR 2 at a much cheaper price then I might think about getting one.

Hm, now I wonder how much of an impact this strategy of selling the headset only through their own website has had on the low sales. If it's not being sold anywhere else, then there's no ads for it to be found on Amazon, etc. Which probably makes a big difference.

Not sure why Sony has decided on this strategy at all. They've never offered anything exclusively through their site before. Even when it would have made it a lot of sense for the first 1-2 years or so of the PS5's lifetime to deal with scalpers. Or is that why they've decided to release PSVR2 in such a manner? Thinking that it would be just as popular as the PS5.

@Atzenkiller: it has outsold the less expensive predecessor under worse economic conditions since it was released. Hundreds of thousands of units in the first three weeks alone. The problem with your perception here is that someone who doesn't know anything about videogames juxtaposed that fact with a figure that Sony supposedly expected to reach during its launch window, which probably wasn't the first three weeks. And outlets that circulate rumors picked it up.

No one has ever said Sony expects a peripheral to sell as well as the console. VR is still niche and they're selling at a loss even with the steep price and want to combat scalpers. It was a soft open

@id0ntkn0w7: So how do you know that Sony was not expecting to sell any more units? From what I remember hearing sales numbers were really quite low. Still higher than the PSVR1? Can't say as I've never heard any sales numbers from it. But PSVR2 seems to be a significant step up from the first one. Which was not that great from everything I've heard and had a lot of competition. All in all VR so far has been very gimmicky, while PSVR2 has shown the first proper use of VR in proper games, namely in GT7 which can be played fully with it.

So just based on that I'd expect sales to be higher. I've never really considered getting a VR headset before. I was considering getting the PSVR2 but as GT7 is so far the only game I could use it for I'll wait until it seems worth buying. Ultimately it would have likely sold a lot better if Sony was smart enough to implement backwards compatibility, same as they've done with the PS5 to great success.

@Atzenkiller: you remember wrong. Don't get your information from rumor websites. PSVR2, once again, is significantly outselling PSVR1, even with the mountain it has to climb. You are free to look those numbers up if you don't believe me.

It was a soft open. They just confirmed that after a little over two months of testing the waters with their online store, they will be selling through major retailers.

And backwards compatibility costs money. Do you really want to play this thing with move controllers and the PS4 camera?

@id0ntkn0w7: Ifyou had to use old hardware it wouldn't be backwards compatilibity. Of course implementing BC costs money. And as Sony should have learned by now it brings in a lot more, at a time where you can download any game that's ever been released from online stores. It's pretty much the only thing that could really boost PSVR2 sales at this point as so far there's barely any reason to buy one. And who knows how long it'll take until that changes. The PS5 would still not be worth buying looking at the complete lack of current gen exclusive games so far, if it didn't have backwards compatibility, which changes everything and has made this the most popular console ever.

@Atzenkiller:

It's really quite zany that you think a record-setting console is only selling because people can play the previous generation's games on it, particularly when that demographic can already play those games on PS4.

But I guess all of the 4 and 5 star reviews are wrong, all of the glowing reviews of Horizon and Resident Evil are wrong, and the PSVR2 can be called a failure a couple of months into a soft launch because it doesn't play PSVR Worlds and a 20-minute Batman experience from seven years ago.

@id0ntkn0w7: Just what are you talking about? The only reason why the PS5 has been selling like crazy, even for more than double its actual price by scalpers, is backwards compatibility. Pretty much every single game that is still being released today is also being released for last gen consoles. So if it wasn't for BC, which even improved performance on last gen games, the PS5 would still not be worth buying due to complete lack of exclusive titles. And no new console is usually worth buying in the first year or so because it takes some time until there's some decent games around that make it worth getting. But BC has changed that completely and one can only hope that Sony has finally learned its lesson. Since they weren't smart enough to realize the importance of it back in the PS3 era when they already introduced their own digital store, which theoretically allowed people to buy any game ever released.

They need to include a price drop with that if they really want to get people interested in a proprietary headset. I don't play much, maybe a few hours a week in VR but I haven't touched my quest or PCVR since I got the PSVR2. I just feel more immersed when I'm in PSVR2 because of the deeper blacks and the blocking out of all incoming light sources. Not to mention the wider field of view, everything just feels a lot more open, I feel kind of confined when I'm on the quest.

@fester420: They need to make it PC compatible and SteamVR compliant. It would instantly triple or quadruple the value of the thing, for me, and make me want to go get one.

Sony has every reason to do this. Their own first party VR games would sell better if they followed the recent scheme and came to PC later. Sony could open their own PC storefront if needed, I would have no complaints there.

If the single USB-C connection to the headset doesn't work with a lot of PCs, that's fine, they could make a bit more $ by selling us an adapter for it, with all the ports we might need

@Spartan_418: Do you know how much profit they're actually making from each sold headset? If they're making any at all. Maybe game sales are the only reason why it's worth selling the headset.

Also the same obvious reason as always comes to mind as for why they haven't made it pc compatible: PSVR2 relies on the PS5's hardware and it needs to be pretty powerful. Even more so when you're trying to run it on pc where you can't optimize at all for the millions of different hardware setups.

So looking at how much money Sony is making from VR games sold exclusively through their store and how much effort it might require to have the PSVR2 run properly on most pc setups, I can see why they might not consider it worth it. Just as there's not much point in them releasing all their exclusives on pc. Sure, if they can port the games with little effort it would bring in a few extra bucks. But any game they offer on pc as well takes sales away from the PS5, consoles and games overall as someone who buys a PS5 for a specific game is likely to buy others as well.

Multiplatform releases are something that only benefits game publishers. Console manufacturers don't stand anything to gain from it, at least not when it comes to doing full ports of exclusive games. Nintendo was smarter about it, releasing some shitty mobile games using their brands. Stuff that you wouldn't normally find on their handhelds as it's why too crappy even for their playerbase.

@Atzenkiller: Don't know the profit or loss margin on the headset but that's why I'm saying they should sell an adapter for PC. Maybe it only costs $12 to make and they sell it for $40, they wouldn't get too many complaints there

The PS5 level hardware requirement shouldn't be a huge issue, especially if the eye tracking and foveated rendering still worked on PC. Good thing the PS5 is 3+ year old tech by now. You shouldn't need anything insane like a 3080 or above to use it. It could be reasonably flexible like maybe a 2060 is the min spec, if the games' settings could be adjusted down a little

@Spartan_418: Everything else I said still applies. You really think Sony would care to sell you some adapter, whatever the point of it would be, for a handful of bucks? In exchange for losing out on all the extra profits from having exclusive games and the seemingly best VR headset also being exclusive to their platform?

@Atzenkiller: You may be right, the smartest and most profitable thing for Sony might be to keep it PS5 exclusive.

In which case they need to do other things to give it more value- such as making it easy for large numbers of old and existing VR games to be ported to PS5. If they were on the way to making a third or a half of the VR games on Steam available on PS5, and a lot of them were cheap, then I would probably get a PSVR 2. It would be worth it
