PlayStation Showcase 2023 Coming May 24 With PS5 Reveals

Sony officially announces that a PlayStation Showcase event is coming very soon.

A PlayStation Showcase event will take place on May 24, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced. The event will take place that Wednesday at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET.

"The show will run a bit over an hour, focusing on PS5 and PS VR2 games in development from top studios from around the world. Expect a glimpse at several new creations from PlayStation Studios, as well as spellbinding games from our third-party partners and indie creators," PlayStation said.

That's all PlayStation had to say about the upcoming PlayStation Showcase. In terms of upcoming titles that could be on display, Sony could show Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Naughty Dog's Last of Us multiplayer game, and any number of other titles. There could be unexpected announcements and additional surprises as well.

This has been rumor for months. Reporter Jeff Grubb of GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb reported in February that a big PlayStation event would happen before June. At the time, the report said this event would happen in the lead-up to E3 2023. That show is now canceled, but summertime gaming events are going ahead regardless.

Other big-time gaming events this summer include Summer Games Fest, the Xbox Games Showcase, and the Starfield Direct in June. Ubisoft Forward is also taking place in June, while Gamescom Opening Night Live is taking place in August. Check out GameSpot's Not-E3 Schedule to learn more.

The PlayStation brand is soaring at the moment. PS5 sales have climbed to more than 38 million through March 31. The 6.3 million units sold during the January-March period represents the most consoles that any company has ever shipped in a January-March quarter, beating all figures from past PlayStation consoles, as well as Xbox and Nintendo.

It will be interesting to see what direction (from a gameplay standpoint) a modern Wolverine video game takes.

@PSP107: I can't tell you how curious I am about this game in general. All we know is it's getting an M rating (thank goodness). So okay, there's blood, but to what extent? Technically Wolverine's claws could easily Kratos people to pieces. Also as a fighter, Wolverine has such a limited set of moves. It's not like he's big on kicking, and he doesn’t have a web to play around with, so what will they do to expand on that?

Last thought, I really hope it's not a big world like Spider-Man. Definitely hoping for something more like TLOU. Smaller, but close attention to detail. And I really hope they nail us with a dark gritty mature story.

We're approaching a year into the new PS+ service. It be nice they announce something big for it like improving the premium model by adding a wealth of PS1/PS2/PSP/PS3 games. Hell throw Vita into the mix too.

@PSP107: finally got my ps5 2 weeks ago and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the new PS+. It’s a solid catalog and I just have Extra, not the top tier so I’m missing the classic catalog (I have zero desire to replay PS1, PS2, and PS3 games. Not enough time in life…).

Now that I’m PS5’d up I think I want to see Wolverine most of all at this display. Then FF7 Rebirth.

"Glimpse" is not my favorite word leading up to a showcase.

That said, I'll be happy if it's 80% PS5 and 20% PSVR. We've seen the opposite too many times.

@olddadgamer: At least a glimpse is knowing. Like we don't know anything about a lot of things currently. So if a glimpse is simply confirmations that's fine with me. Like just tell me what devs like Sucker Punch, Housemarque, and Bluepoint are working on. And I know Cory Barlog is working on something for a while now too.

@olddadgamer: If there's no Spider-Man 2 gameplay I think people will riot lol. I'm definitely not a fan of CG trailers, but yeah better than nothing just to get a foggy confirmation haha. That's certainly the case with Bloodborne for me. Just knowing it's coming would have me crazy excited.
