What video game executives will learn from Tears of the Kingdom:
— Jason Schreier (@jasonschreier) May 16, 2023
- Games all need crafting now
What they should learn from Tears of the Kingdom:
- Retaining your staff is vital
- The graphical fidelity arms race is a waste of money
- Games all need rockets now
I don't disagree with a single point.
The controls can be a bit tricky. Have died a number of times due to pressing a wrong button in the heat of battle. Part of it is on me with muscle memory from control schemes in other games I’ve played. Get use to certain mechanics being associated to certain buttons as standard in many games. Also though there’s a fair amount of things going on in this game to associate to buttons.
@Archangel3371:
Can't say I'm having issues myself, but it is a very stacked scheme for sure. They work the dpad as much as a DMC game lol. And in terms of holding/toggling modifier buttons, shades of old MGS2/MGS3. Think it's pretty well done for just how much you can access on a whim, but yeah it's pretty loaded.
Definitely think that every single damn game should come with full button config options. I'm usually fine with defaults, but still, that shit should be standard at this point.
@ConanTheStoner: from what I just read, this sounds like Zelda meets Death Stranding lol
Wait, Archs post? Not sure I follow, but if so, yeah Death Stranding was pretty well packed on controls too lol. Kojima stuff in general is so mechanically dense. Hope that guy never decides to design a game strictly around keyboard.
I was surprised when entering the first stable in Hyrule, I noticed that the game learned that I had a save file from Breath of the Wild and brought all the horses I registered (including Epona) into Tears of the Kingdom. No need to tame wild horses in this game.
The puzzles in the Shrines turn out to be a challenge for me, eventhough I was able to complete most of them. I had to be very creative to solve the puzzles

That happened to me too!

lol I meant the rockets. Haven’t gotten there yet. Seems like you get some crazy gadgets!

Ohhh yeah lol. Forgot all about DS rocket launchers. Though the utility of rockets in TotK puts that stuff to shame. Tons of uses.
Yeah man, so many dope Zonai devices. Sometimes forget just how many cool options I have on hand, think I have 23 different types at the moment.
@ConanTheStoner: Yeah, no doubt user error on my end. My brain just wants to keep associating certain functions to certain buttons. Have been getting much better at adjusting though.
Damn man. I know the puzzles in this game are pretty clever, about as good as it gets for something that isn't purely a puzzle game. But I haven't truly been stumped until just now. Not the shrine solve itself, but the optional treasure. Probably took a good 15 mins of trying dumb shit before it clicked.
Jirutagumac Shrine "A Flying Device" in the Lanayru sky sphere. Definitely a good one.

Did that a lot too, until I changed jump from X to B. Now I don't let go and die while climbing anymore. :P Easier to dogde and shit too.
@Litchie: I think I’ll be doing the same, it’s the only button I forget.
Was the thing that bothered me the most, but I totally brainfart on other things as well. The controls are easy to **** up, especially in the heat of battle. But I hope I'll learn to control the game more naturally as I play more. Just takes a while with this game..

@Litchie: Yeah I changed that jump button around right from the get go. Definitely did not feel right with the default.
Started tackling the main Zora stuff last night, figured I'll be playing forever if I don't go for another region lol. Also top notch so far. Gotta love how much this game trusts the player, even more so than BotW.
Just awesome game, damn.
I’ve just been randomly exploring so much. Haven’t even seen my first temple. Just recently started progressing the main story again.
@Archangel3371:
Yeah man, the side stuffs so good, easy to just enjoy random exploration. And with the multi layered map, just always something new and different.
Think you'll really dig the main region content when you get to it. Only on my second one, but they really got creative and elaborate with the stuff.
Only thing that sucks about the game being so open, anything can be a spoiler for someone else in discussion lol. Hate having to be so vague about such cool stuff!
@ConanTheStoner: Yeah, it can be tough trying to dance around spoiler stuff right now. I haven’t even done that many side quests either. Have mostly just been doing shrines and trying to reveal the map. I like helping out the sign guy and getting kuroks back with their friends in a variety of unsafe ways. 😅
@Archangel3371:
Sign guy did end up being more interesting than I thought. Sometimes a no brainer, other times a fun enough little puzzle.
Koroks returning was definitely a groan moment for me at first. But it is nice that there's a lot more variety to them now, and how some are more involved. Even some of the returning Korok puzzles are really improved. Those block arrangement puzzles in BotW were usually a bit too simple, but I've come across a few now that actually had me stumped for a bit.
As for the "find my friend" guys... half the time I'm thinking "you better be glad you're cute you little shit". 😂 Those detours can be a bit much.
@ConanTheStoner: When I ran into my first Korok I was like Steve Carrel from The Office. “No. No. Please God. Nooooooooooo!” 😅
@Archangel3371:
lol definitely. First one I found seemed like a troll on Nintendos part too. Burn leaves, pick up rock in middle of thing. 😑
Do think this is one thing they definitely could've changed. Can come up with literally anything as an excuse for inventory expansion.
Still, glad to see it's improved and more varied at least.
The transition to the Depths was seamless and the Depths themselves are nice. Surprised by the Switch hardware!
@SolidGame_basic:
Yeah man. Impressive game no matter the hardware, but it is especially impressive what they managed on the Switch.
A lot of the game dev talk around this game is more hype than the gamer talk lol.
@ConanTheStoner: The game surprisingly does volumetric clouds well too, considering this game originally runs on the switch. But the art style is really doing the heavy lifting in this game.
But the art style is really doing the heavy lifting in this game.
Oh absolutely.
It's more that it's impressive from a design and development standpoint. The fact that all of this just works and isn't breaking the game, just damn lol.
Far as like technical graphics though, only thing that really amazes is the draw distance they're pushing on a Switch of all things. And it is pretty crazy how you can dive from the tip top of the sky all the way into the depths without a hitch.
Feels like they completed the game a year ago and have only been polishing it up since.
@ConanTheStoner: lol

So far I'm 5 hours in and absolutely loving it, but it kills me to see this piece of 'art' being constrained to extremely outdated hardware. The dev team did the best they could with the given limitations, but man do the graphics stink. Absolutely no anti-analyzing, pop-ins and franerate drops are too drastic to ignore.
Imagine this game with its scope and art direction on modern hardware. 😳
