Rogue One Director Pits Mankind Against A Killer AI In The Creator

It's John David Washington vs AI in Gareth Edwards' latest.

AI has become a trending topic across technology lately, particularly as its capabilities have crept into the art department and become popular tools in design to downright plagiarism. While it's a huge chasm before programs like ChatGPT and Midjourney are used in any sort of military capacity, Rogue One director Gareth Edwards asks a big "what if" with The Creator.

Though AI as a villainous force has been around for decades, The Creator takes a different approach. The film follows protagonist Joshua (John David Washington) after discovering that a world-ending weapon he's been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child, making for a somewhat reverse-Terminator scenario. Check out the trailer below.

The Creator offers an apocalyptic look at the possibilities of AI if we gave it the right access: Would it destroy us? Would it weigh every possible solution before nuking us? Based on the trailer, a lot of the imagery looks similar to Rogue One, albeit with more realistic and human elements.

Washington is joined by Allison Janney, country singer Sturgill Simpson, Ken Watanabe, and Gemma Chan. The film, formerly titled True Love, was written by Edwards as well.

The Creator will be released on September 29 in IMAX and traditional theaters.
