The Diablo series has a rich history of lore, one that stretches from the creation of Sanctuary to the eternal war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. Blizzard has slowly been expanding on this saga with new games, expansions, and lore books, but for Diablo IV, the company is looking to craft a bigger story that aims to expand on the mythos of the series.

Diablo IV looks at the origins of Sanctuary, how that world has soldiered on the decades since Malthael wiped out half of the population in Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, and the new characters that you'll interact with in your quest. You can find out more in this new video from Blizzard, which features several of the game's writers breaking down what they call Diablo's darkest story yet.

"With Diablo IV, you're watching a tragedy unfold," associate writer Eden Trujillo explained. "It's very much a story that we wanted to create, around people. Not just the apocalyptic elements that surround the story. And that's something that we really sought to bring to you as a part of the Diablo narrative."

Diablo IV launches on June 6 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and PC, but before it arrives, you can take part in its final playtest, called Server Slam, from May 12-14. This beta is designed to stress-test the game before it launches, and will let you try out the game's five classes and opening area. The game will have a seasonal model of post-launch content, with the first season kicking off in July.
