7 years, another Zelda later, and TW3 is still the best RPG.

It’s amazing how no RPG since has managed to beat the Witcher 3 and it’s immersive open world and epic storytelling. Wow!

Metacritic User scores:

BOTW - 8.3

Tears - 8.7

TW3 - 9.1

It’s getting close, but come on! 7 years have passed and no one has yet bested CDProject’s masterpiece.

Why is it so hard for others to replicate The Witcher 3’s success with gamers?

Umm... neither TotK or BotW are RPGs. And your criteria is silly.

And there is a better RPG out there, we have 2 in fact. Disco Elysium and Elden Ring are both better RPGs than TW3. As much as I dislike Elden Ring, it is still for all intents and purposes, a very well made game.

Zelda is an Action Adventure. And they are arguably the best Action Adventures on the market.

They are both overrated Titels. Both games have to many issues and idk how they got away with it. Open world games get boring quickly they make them to big and to boring to explore and some games add really stupid unnecessary puzzles. Elden ring got perfect scores and the game looks and plays like a ps3 game

I'm more disappointed by the fact that this new Tears of the Kingdom is very much like Breath of the Wild. I know it is going to be an unpopular opinion to go against the grain on a new Zelda, but so much of this new game is recycled content. Same formula of going to all the towers to map out the world, going to the shrines for bite-sized puzzles, same moblin enemies here and there in there scrappy forts (with added winged beasts sometimes for something new), very similar story to me, obviously the map is very much the same as before just now it has been tweaked and landscapes have been added of course, and dammit! even so much of the music has been recycled from BotW.

Perhaps it's my fault for replaying BotW last year to do a more complete run but so much of this new game feels exactly like the previous one that I've gotten so disappointed by it. I still am having fun and it's not like it's a bad game at all. But it feels almost like the same game....like dlc. I'm sorry to succumb to that sentiment but I can't help but feel like it's just an expansion. And I'm disappointed.

@Maroxad: Elden Ring has a 6.9 user score. The other is an 8.5. Your claim is nonsense. C’mon, man!

I share this sentiment, although I will still be playing the game for a long time and trying to do everything I can without looking it up on the internet. It's still good fun. More BOTW isn't a bad thing. Lots to explore and find, and doing so is usually actual fun (my biggest complaint about Elden Ring- most of the stuff I found didn't lead to much fun for me)

I'm glad I only did 2 playthroughs of BOTW- once in 2017 and once in 2019. Thought about playing it again earlier this year but decided not to.

@templecow90999: Crazy thing though, for me Elden Ring has become my favorite video game of all time. I love the souls formula so of course I have my bias there, but I thought From really knocked it all out of the park with the huge open world. It reminded me of BotW but with the difficulty that Souls games come with. I thought BotW was really fun as well. But then Nintendo repeated it with this new one. I'm glad they added things in here that I won't spoil but it doesn't really feel like enough given that it is the same map.

Well whatever. I'm still having some fun with it and the hilarious creations on youtube that people are making are fun to watch. It's just not a 10/10 masterpiece best game of all time for me.

@tjandmia: User Review Scores are little more than a controversy indicator. Considering how susceptible to review bombing user scores are.

At most they are entertaining to laugh at when you get insecure fanboys, cheapskates or alt-righters review bomb games that goes against their preferences.

Anyways, opinions and all. Would definitely help if you played the games though.

Didn't even think TW3 was the best RPG released that year. Not even the best ARPG released that year. But at least I tried it. And gotta say, doesn't have me upset that others enjoy it.

Witcher 3 feels bad to play. I liked it for a lot of reasons, but sure as heck not for the responsive game play. It's a sluggish waypoint simulator with great world building and some good stories and characters.

Rather play CP2077.

Since Journalists and Game Critics have their career on the line. They aren't going to review bomb like Randos would. And TotK has been review bombed. It did end up backfiring though.

Both metrics are bad though. Argue from the game's merits. NOT arbitary numbers people assign the game.

I havent played TW3, and I honestly don't care to. The gameplay didnt look all that appealing and I really don't care for roleplaying games where you have a predefined protagonist. I play role playing games to roleplay. Having a pre-defined protagonist really gets in the way of that. As an action game I have heard it utterly fails.

Meanwhile Tears of the Kingdom doesnt even try to be a role playing game, so the predefined protagonist doesnt bother me in the slightest. Instead, it tries to be an excellent sandbox game first and foremost, and it succeeds in that regard, tremendously. With a ton of world interactivity and scenarios to test your skills. It is also an action game. It doesnt do a particularly good job with the melee mechanics. But the wide variety of tools you have at your disposal. Makes the combat enjoyable in its own right.

And when we look at reviews of TW3 Complete, which is the best version of the game, we will notice that TotK either surpasses TW3 in terms of user scores. People have higher expectations in 2023 than they did 7 years ago.

The only good thing TW3 had going for it is its visuals for 2015 standards, story and writing. Everything gameplay related was garbage.

Elden Ring is a much more engrossing as a Roleplaying Game than Any Witcher game ever was. Let alone action game. Where ER does a pretty good job overall.

One of the many characters I created in Elden Ring was Karl Marx where I dual wielded a hammer and sickle. The Witcher 3 would never let me do that.

Well yeah man, Zelda melee doesn't score points with me as discussed previously. But I can at least say it's serviceable, fine, never distracting or in the way. It's not bad, just know it could be way cooler. And like you said, other elements do help to fill in the blanks.

The Witcher games actively feel bad to play lol. Combat is wack. Made even worse in their case as that is the gameplay. Killing shit is what you do, the primary mode of play.

That is why I found TW1 and 2 boring. I spent most of my time killing stuff. But killing stuff was a real doze. At that point, I would rather just read one of the official witcher books... which I did. Loved them.

In fact, there are a lot of RPGs lately I think would have been just better as Adventure Games, or non-combat RPGs.

Ultima 4: Would have been much better if they just cut out the violence all together. Would have made for a more wholesome experience. And could truly have been the Tintin of Tibet of video games. The whole game is about being virtuous, but slaughtering 20 bandits and 50 orcs on my travels between every town, kinda distracted from the whole, being Buddha feel the game had going for it. Still one of the best RPGs ever made.

The Witcher: When combat is this boring, just make an adventure game. Add interactivity in the form of branching paths and multiple ways to overcome situations, King's Quest style.

I never played those Zelda games, but isn't Zelda a very different game from The Witcher? In the latter you fight scary witches, people die left and right of horrible stuff, and you can even chop off the head of your opponent. Zelda features a little boy and colorful graphics. I can't compare the two.
